Intro: The Limitation on Life's Luxuries

Question: How does mental disability affect the lives of those who have one?
A natural occurrence in the lives of many, mental disability is both a fortune and misfortune in many ways. Mental limitations among loved ones may encourage a stronger bond between the person with the mental disability and those close to him/her, however mental disability still creates many limitations- especially in the judgemental society of today. These kinds of limitations are largely seen in Steinbeck's "Of Mice and Men" specifically, with the mentally challenged character Lennie Small....

Throughout the story this troublesome yet innocent character becomes the source of major conflicts among the characters. Lennie, being mentally retarded, attracts issues such as prejudice, alienation, and lack of independence . The posts in this blog will explore the theme of mental disability and how it limits life's everyday luxuries, using "Of Mice and Men" as a major example, and making many other connections to media. Through my future posts I hope to raise awareness about how much western society is negatively affecting those who are mentally retarded, and make a bit of difference in this world.
